It was all in your head, they said. There is no such thing as ghosts. Just the manifestation of a grief-stricken mind. A fantasy created out of sorrow. And he wanted to believe them. He wanted to believe Nathan had gone to a better place, so why did he keep catching sight of him from the corner of his eye? Grief? Sorrow? Were they even friends? Jack glanced down at the paperwork strewn across his desk and avoided flicking his eyes to the corner of the room where Nathan stood watching him with a familiar smirk on his face.

Summary: When Jack returns from 1947 he finds himself still a Deputy US Marshal in the L.A. office having missed that turn-off to Eureka and not crashed his car all those years ago. Fortunately Allison is still in Eureka and she figures out a way to get him back to the town using Zoe's known high I.Q. and potential. What Jack doesn't expect to find is a few more differences in the time line, including the return of Nathan Stark from the 'dead'. Settling back into Eureka isn't easy as he is no longer the Sheriff, no longer pining after Allison, and is now a stranger to everyone who knew him except for those who time traveled to 1947 and back with him. Another major difference, this time he manages to avoid starting a macho posturing war with Nathan over Allison and discovers there is a third side to that former love triangle.

When Nathan needs transport for the final leg of his journey to Eureka it's at a time when it seems to be every man for himself, but while searching he finds more than he ever expected when he meets U.S. Marshal Jack Carter.
